Unas, Abhijith bag titles

KOCHI: K.A. Unas, with six points from seven rounds, won the rapid chess tournament jointly organised by the MBM Chess Academy and the Ernakulam District Chess Association at Kalamassery.

Viswajyothi School’s Abhijith topped the event for school children.

Final placings (open): 1. K.A. Unas (Kochi, 6 pts), 2. P.V. Santhosh (Thrissur, 5), 3. P.A. Ajmal (Aluva, 5).

Schools section: 1. Abhijith (Viswajyothi School, 4 pts), 2. Vivek Joshi (Nava Nirman, 3.5), 3. Aravind Ravikumar (Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, 3.5).

Aleena makes a mark

Aleena George of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, shattered the sub-junior girls shot put meet mark on the opening day of the 27th Dr. K.M. Munshi memorial inter-school athletics meet at the Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Eroor, on Monday.

The host Eroor Bhavan’s was in the lead with 68 points followed by St. Peter’s (Kadayiruppu, 56 points).

Dominic Presentation, MLA, opened the two-day event.

Contrasting wins

Kottayam and Palakkad scored contrasting wins in men’s section in the State Senior basketball championships at the Public stadium, Tiruvalla on Monday.

Kottayam crushed Wayand 60-20 in a one-sided affair. Jaisy Philip (14) and Praveen (10) were the prominent scorers for the winner.

Palakkad squeezed out a 45-44 win over Idukki in a thrilling match after leading 23-18 at half-time. Ebin P.Jose (14) and Eby Sony (12) were the top-scorers for Palakkad while Ajith Sugunan (12) and Jose Thomas (10) did well for Idukki.

SASC advances

SASC, Wynad, defeated Basco (Malappuram) 4-2, via the tie-breaker, in the opening match of the 34th Kerala State inter-club football championship at the Corporation Stadium in Thrissur on Monday night. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation period.
