Transco purchases power from traders

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Following power shortage again, APTransco on Saturday began to purchase power from traders and even captive generation plants to meet the demand which is hovering at 215 million units (mu) a day.

The increase in demand is attributed to the continued heavy load from the agriculture load. A majority of the 27 lakh-odd farm pumpsets are operated to raise or save the rabi crops, an official said.

On Friday, the power utilities supplied only 193 mu against the 215 mu demand, tapping all its sources, and continued a four-hour cut in rural areas to save 20 mu. The breakdown of the newly-commissioned 500-MW unit of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station following teething troubles has only added to the woes of the Transco.

Power is being purchased from captive units of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Navbharat, Heavy Water Plant at Manugur and some sugar factories. The situation, however, is likely to improve from December 5 when the Srisailam right bank powerhouse which was submerged during the Krishna floods, is expected to resume generation.
