Open trouble: This manhole in Bharathi Street, Salem, has remained uncovered for long .

SALEM: Residents of Bharathi Street in Ammaper (Ward 37) in the city have urged the Salem Corporation to take immediate steps to close a manhole that has been causing them a lot of hardships.

These residents, mainly weavers, claimed that the manhole, in the middle of a street connecting important thoroughfares, had remained open for long. “We have asked the officials to close it. But they are yet to act,” a resident said.

Motorists and children particularly found it difficult to use the street with a gaping hole in it. Many had, the residents claimed, fallen when rainwater the street.

Lorries using the street would damage the cement slab that would be put as its lid. “We need a ‘pucca’ lid for the waterhole to prevent accidents,” said another resident here.

They asked the civic body to address their issue immediately.
