Inquiry sought into the activities of environmentalists Subbaiah threatens legal action against them Madikeri: A.K. Subbaiah, former MLC, on Saturday urged the Centre and the State Government to ban environmental groups from entering the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests in the name of conducting research and conservation of flora and fauna. He was addressing presspersons here. His observations came in the wake of a writ petition filed in the Karnataka High Court a few days ago by the Kodagu Small Growers’ Association from Siddapur seeking an inquiry into the role of some non-governmental organisations operating as environmentalists in the forests. Mr. Subbaiah said the Government should order an inquiry into the “illegal” activities of some environmental groups since 2000 in the State, including collection of animal bones. The association would resort to judicial means and raise awareness among the people of the district on the “evil” designs of the environmentalists, he said. Mr. Subbaiah said that 12 wildlife organisations operated in the State, but all had one address. It was a ploy to garner funds from abroad in the name of conservation of flora and fauna, he alleged. The environmentalists’ lobby was formidable, but the association would fight it, he said. Cheranda Nanda Subbaiah, former president of the association, was present.
