Constable held for demanding dowry

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A constable attached to the Central Industrial Security Force unit at Neyveli who allegedly refused to tie the knot demanding dowry was arrested by the Sembium police here on Friday.

According to police sources, the wedding of M. Malayathri (31) with a girl of Nellore was fixed at a marriage hall in Perambur on Friday. Hours before the marriage, the groom’s family raised objection over non-payment of a part of the dowry promised. They demanded that the balance money be settled in cash before the wedding.

Even as the bride’s family offered to give gold jewels, Malayathri refused and left the marriage hall on Thursday night. When he did not turn up for the wedding, the bride’s father lodged a complaint with the Sembium police.

After preliminary investigation, police arrested Malayathri under the provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, the sources said.
