Four held for woman murder
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Four persons were arrested here late on Thursday night in connection with the murder of a woman at CIT Nagar in Saidapet last Sunday.
According to police sources, Jayalakshmi (65) was found dead with her throat slit in a flat on the third floor of an apartment in CIT Nagar. Based on a complaint lodged by her husband Gajapathy (70), the Saidapet police had registered a case. A special team formed to investigate the ‘murder for gain’ case arrested Madan (24), Sankaranarayanan (38), his wife Priya (22) and an accomplice Balaji (21) of Koyambedu.
Investigation revealed that Sankaranarayanan and Madan, known to Jayalakshmi, had borrowed some money for investing in a business sometime back. On November 22, they came to return part of the money to her. A discussion over settling the balance amount led to a heated argument.
In the scuffle that followed, Jayalakshmi allegedly threatened to lodge a police complaint against the two and dropped the names of two VIPs. Enraged over this, Madan and Sankaranarayanan murdered her with a knife. They snatched a 15-sovereign gold chain from the victim and fled the scene. “We have recovered the jewel intact. Balaji and Priya who were part of the conspiracy have also been arrested. All the accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody on Friday,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) R. Tirugnanam said.
