CHENNAI: Motorists, who have been taking a detour for over three months now due to expanding the capacity of the sewerage interceptor system on Police Commissioner Office Road, Egmore, demand speeding up of the project.

Many road-users said the work, which is being carried out on one half of the road since September, had led to traffic diversions through other roads such as Gandhi Irwin Road and Whannels Road.

S.Vijay, who regularly uses the stretch, said motorists had to take a detour of nearly two km as the Police Commissioner Office Road is closed for traffic. The already busy Gandhi-Irwin Road, which the houses Egmore Railway Station, gets choked with heavy traffic during rush hour.

Casa Major Road also suffers from traffic pile-up as motorists bound for Anna Salai through Police Commissioner Road have also started using it, he said. Motorists demanded that the work be completed soon to put an end to traffic woes.

Chennai Metrowater officials said it was a major work involving construction of 32 new manholes and additional sewer line leading to Langs Garden sewage pumping station. The work covers a total distance of 900 metre till Pudupet.

Of the 12 manholes to be constructed on the 300-metre stretch from Dr. Nair Bridge junction to Adithanar Statue on Pantheon Road, five have been completed so far.

It was part of the additional works of Chennai City River Conservation Project executed at a cost of Rs.1.57 crore. The work was time-consuming as it involved construction of manholes at a depth of four to six metres and laying of additional sewer line to increase the carrying capacity of the network. While the project period on the entire stretch was 18 months, the work on the stretch till Pantheon Road junction would be completed by April next year, the officials said.
