CHENNAI: The ‘Sangeeth and Naatya Utsav 2009’ hosted by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra was inaugurated here on Friday. The 18-day-long music and dance festival commenced with a Carnatic music recital by vocalist Nithyasree Mahadevan.
At a ceremony held at the Bhavan’s Sri Venkata auditorium in Mylapore, Andrew. T. Simkin, Consul General of United States in Chennai, lit the lamp and unveiled the cultural festival, after listening to a nagaswaram performance.
Addressing the audience later, Mr. Simkin said: “It is going to be our second consecutive music season in the city and we have a foundation to enjoy it this year,” he added.
T. S. Krishnamurthy, former Chief Election Commissioner and chairman of Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra, said the Kendra would open a cultural and educational complex at Tiruporur in January and host a Sanskrit seminar in February.
