N.S. Ramya. BANGALORE: N.S. Ramya, a 12th standard school girl from Saru Matric HS, Erode gave India’s it first athletics gold in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games. At the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Friday, Ramya coached by SDAT’s Ranjit and Kandaswamy from her school heaved the iron ball to a distance of 9.50 metres, her personal best. At the Jaipur Nationals for paralympics Ramya had won both the shot put and discus throw events. Boosting India’s gold tally was the golfers, the powerlifters and swimmer Prashant Karmarkar. Golf introduced for the first time in this edition of the IWAS Games had just two participants — India and Korea. India’s Col. Rajendra Rawat, who lost his right leg in the IPKF action at Jafna in 1988, carded seven over for the day for a two day total of 163 just enough to pip the Korean challenge.
