KOCHI: Thrissur’s A.B. Bhagesh (56 kg) and Ernakulam’s E.C. Rajan (60 kg) won golds in the Kerala State senior inter-club powerlifting championship at the Municipal Community Hall, Thrikakkara, on Friday. In the junior State championship, Thrissur’s V.V. Vaisak (52 kg), Idukki’s Nikhil Suresh (56 kg) and P.S. Subeesh (60 kg) emerged champions. Dominic Presentation, MLA, inaugurated the three-day event. Big win for St. Mary’sSt. Mary’s HSS, Pattom defeated Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom by seven wickets and won the title in the Thiruvananthapuram district inter-school cricket tournament at the Medical College ground on Friday. Shanu S. Kumar was the architect of St. Mary’s win with an unbeaten 71 as his side successfully chased a victory target of 154 with more than nine overs to spare. Earlier, Kendriya Vidyala was restricted to 153 for nine in 30 overs. The scores: Kendriya Vidyalaya 153 for nine in 30 overs (Nitheesh 65, Danny three for 18) lost to St. Mary’s HSS 154 for three in 20.2 overs (Shanu S. Kumar 71 n.o., Aravind 32). Tvm posts winThiruvananthapuram defeated Alappuzha by nine wickets in the South Zone under-14 inter-district cricket tournament at the Mar Thoma College ground, Thiruvalla on Friday. Arjun Narayanan struck a century (119) as Thiruvananthapuram, overnight 180 for five, extended its lead to 102 runs. Alappuzha in the second innings was dismissed for 179 leaving Thiruvananthapuram a target of 78. Thiruvananthapuram reached the target in 16 overs for the loss for one wicket and secured five points for the win. The Kollam-Kottayam match at the Municipal stadium, Pathanamthitta could not be completed due to non-availability of the ground. The match has been shifted to Mar Thoma College ground and will resume on Saturday. Shameer shinesShameer’s fine all-round performance (42 and three for 14) helped Government HSS, Edapally, defeat St. Albert’s HSS (Kochi) by 95 runs and enter the third round of the first Century all-Kerala schools cricket tournament at the St. Albert’s College Ground, Kaloor, Kochi on Friday. In another match, Akhil’s five-wicket haul went in vain as Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir (Elamakkara) lost to TDHSS (Thuravur) by three wickets. The Thuravur team entered the pre-quarterfinals. Anand came up with a six-wicket haul against Thrissur in the Central Zone under-14 inter-district cricket championship at the Government Polytechnic Ground, Muttom, Idukki on Friday. The two-dayer, which turned out to be a one-dayer after the first day was washed away by rain, ended in a draw. In the other match at the Muthalakudam St. George HSS Ground, host Idukki gained the first innings lead against Ernakulam. The scores: Thrissur 138 in 52.1 overs (P.S. Anand six for 32) v Palakkad 127 for eight in 41 overs (Sudan Sanjeev 64, Nithin four for 18). Rapid chessThe Ernakulam District Chess Association, in association with the MBM Chess Academy, will conduct a rapid chess tournament at the MBM Chess Academy in Kalamassery, Kochi on Sunday. In a nail-biting final, St. Joseph’s scraped past St. Ephrem’s, Mannanam 76-74. Dojo Antony (19) top-scored for the winner while M. Mahesh (26) did the bulk of the scoring for the loser. Varuna Vidyalaya lifts team titleThe host Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, with 96.5 points, won the team title in the fifth Varuna all-Kerala schools chess tournament at Thrikakkara on Wednesday. Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, finished runner-up with 90 points while Amritha Vidyalay (Edapally, 79) was third. Varuna Vidyalaya’s Vishnu Gopakumar, with nine points, won the individual title in the high school section while Chavayur Bhavan’s Athul Krishna (UP section, 9 points) and Paulose Paul (Rajagiri School, Kalamassery, LP section, 8 points) won the top prizes in the other categories. CM lauds Kerala teamThe Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan has lauded the Kerala team which retained the overall championship title for a thirteenth consecutive year in the 55 National school athletic meet, which concluded in Amritsar on Friday. The team’s effort also drew appreciation from the Education Minister, M.A. Baby and the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar. In a message to the team manager, Mr. Baby said: “The entire State is proud of the achievement of the team, which has retained the overall title despite facing several hurdles.” The Sports Minister, Mr.Vijayakumar, while congratulating the team hoped that the win would spur more and more students to take up sports State wrestlingThe State sub-junior wrestling championship for boys and girls will be held at the Vaipin Karthedam Bank Auditorium from December 7 to 9. Competitions will be held in 10 weight categories in both sections – 42kg, 46kg, 50kg, 54kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 76kg, 85kg and 100kg in boy’s section and in 38kg, 40kg, 43kg, 46kg, 49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 65kg and 70kg in girl’s section respectively. The competitions in boy’s section will be held in Greco Roman and freestyle events while in the girls it will be held only in freestyle category. The meet will be used as a selection trials for selecting the State team for the National sub-junior championships, said V.N. Prasood, secretary Kerala State Wrestling Association, at a press release here on Friday. Those born on or after January 1, 1993 are eligible to take part in the meet. The participants should bring an attested copy of their age certificate and a photo at the time of registration.
