Coimbatore: The PPG Institute of Technology 59th Tamil Nadu State volleyball championship for men and women will be held at the VOC Park Corporation Sports Complex courts here from December 9 to 13. Sponsored by PPG Institute of Technology, True Value Homes Private Ltd and a host of others, the five-day event has already attracted 58 teams from the men’s section and 24 from the women’s side. The senior State team for the National championship to be held at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, later next month will be picked from this championship. The championship will be jointly conducted by the Coimbatore District Volleyball Association and the Sports and Cultural Society. Snooker tourneyThe R.S. Puram Club will conduct the State-level invitation snooker tournament at its Club here from November 28 to 30. Kiran Katta IRS, Deputy Director, Income Tax Investigation, will inaugurate. Jayakumar sparklesAt Tirupur, a fine all-round performance by P. Jayakumar (49 & four for 41) enabled Stunners Cricket Club score a 79-run win, under D/L method, over Agni Cricket Club in the TNCA-DCAT second division league at the TEA Public School grounds recently. The scores: Stunners CC 302 for nine in 50 overs (P. Viswanathan 78, G. Hemanand 62, P. Jayakumar 49, J. Prasanna 48) bt Agni CC 104 for eight (P. Jayakumar four for 41). Finalists spottedHost Southern Railway Institute (Golden Rock) and Customs & Central Excise entered the final of the Goa Raja memorial district-level football tournament in Tiruchi on Friday. Southern Railway Institute fought back from a goal’s deficit to beat Students FC 2-1 in the first semifinal, while Customs & Central Excise blanked P&T Durai MFC 4-0 in the other. The results (semifinals): Southern Railway Institute 2 (Venkatnarayanan 2) bt Students FC 1 (Selvakumar); Customs & Central Excise 4 (Suresh 3, Balasubramanian) bt P&T Durai MFC 0. PSNA posts winPSNA FC edged out St. Mary’s FC 1-0 in the Dindigul District Football Association nursery (under-13) league in Dindigul on Friday. Alagusundaram netted the winner in the 16th minute.
