N.R. Shetty Commission has been scrapped

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The State Government has scrapped the one-man regulatory committee headed by former Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor N.R. Shetty, constituted to look into the grievances of students admitted to professional colleges.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) sources told The Hindu that students who have grievances related to admissions and excess fees, will now have to approach the Director of Medical Education and Director of Technical Education.

The committee had been constituted following a Supreme Court direction to redress the grievances of students admitted to medical, dental and engineering colleges in the State. When asked for the reasons behind the sudden decision to scrap the committee, KEA officials said the decision had been taken by the Higher Education Department.

Meanwhile, Dr. Shetty told The Hindu: “Though the Government can scrap the committee, what about the Supreme Court directive?”

However, officials in the Higher Education Department said the committee had been constituted to look into the confusion that had arisen in the seat matrix and fee structure during 2007-08. Since the rules governing admissions had changed now, the Government does not feel the need to continue with the committee. However, the Government will constitute the committee again if it is needed, the official said.
