SALEM: What is the definition of domestic violence? What are the different abuses women undergo, particularly after marriage? And how can a victim seek justice? These were the subjects that were highlighted in the day-long workshop on ‘Domestic Violence and Justice’ convened exclusively for the women police personnel of the city by a group of social and women activists of Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to mark Anti Dowry Day, here on Thursday. The women police personnel were told about the sensitive intricacies of the relationship after wedding and the connected problems that arose. The identification of victims under the Domestic Violence Act 2005 and the need to provide justice to them were taught. The issues such as sexual reproductive health rights, the role of protection and service providers and women police personnel in the social issue were also highlighted. The police personnel were told that victims could also approach the Magistrate directly with their grievances. The need for perfect coordination between police and District Social Welfare Officers was also stressed. The Act, the women police were told, ensured economic compensation to the victims without getting divorce. DSWOs other then police could assist the victims to get justice through courts. Under Section 498 A of the Indian Penal Code, arrests of the accused could be sought, the police personnel were told.The victims could approach Protection Officer here, DSWOs, and service providers such as YWCA, police and judiciary with grievances. Deputy Commissioner of Police Y. John Nicholson inaugurated the workshop and released a handbook in Tamil on ‘Domestic Violence Act 2005.’ YWCA President Suriya Benjamin presided. DSWO Baby Geethanjali delivered special address while YWCA Secretary Ruby Thiagarajan and family counsellor Jeyabharathi spoke at length about the Domestic Violence Act.
