For good health: Collector J. Chandrakumar (left) interacting with children at a function on obesity among girls by Shanmuga College of Nursing in Salem on Thursday. — SALEM: Childhood obesity should be tackled with a two-pronged approach of healthy diet and regular exercise, said Collector J. Chandrakumar. Inaugurating Anti Obesity Day awareness programme organised by the Shanmuga College of Nursing here on Thursday, the Collector pointed out that the increasing obesity among girl children in city schools was a matter of concern. “Hence we must prevent obesity at childhood, which, otherwise would lead to a lot of health complications,” he said, and added that being obese was not healthy at all. Speakers including Principal S. Maragatham, Medical Director P. S. Panneer Selvam and other officials spoke at length about the complications and obesity and asked girl students from six schools in the city to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Maragatham pointed out that a study by her had revealed that obesity was found from 4 to 16 per cent among the girl children in the city. “The ratio is even higher in the girls studying in elite schools and more in urban area than in rural,” she pointed out. Earlier, the Collector inaugurated a ‘Health Expo’ in which children displayed bill boards on nutritious food.
