PUDUCHERRY: Nine girl students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds received a financial assistance from the State Bank of India on Thursday, as part of the ‘Adoption of Girl Child’ Scheme.

The implementation of the scheme is part of the bank’s Community Service Banking initiatives.

“This adoption scheme was started in 2007, and originally our branch was asked to provide assistance to only three girl children. But, since this is a big branch and we are doing good business, we decided to extend this benefit to nine children,” said Assistant General Manager T.S. Govindaraj.

According to a release, a maximum of Rs. 5,000 per annum could be sanctioned to each beneficiary. The expenses covered by the assistance would include school fees, cost of books and stationery, uniform and transport expenses. The child should be in the 6-14 age group and ‘reasonably good’ at studies, the release said.

The emphasis is on financial assistance for girls because many parents consider education for their girl children, a waste, Mr. Govindaraj said. “Parents believe that boys will support them if they are educated. But, they consider education unnecessary for girls. The aim of the scheme is to aid poor families to finance the education of their daughters,” he said.

One per cent of the branch’s profits is required to be allotted to Community Services Banking, and different branches implement many different schemes, such as financing hospital equipment, etc., Mr. Govindaraj said.

He also highlighted other initiatives and features of the branch, such as hi-tech banking and providing educational loans, mortgage loans and reverse mortgage loans.
