MYSORE: Chamundi, the 70-member commando force, raised by the Mysore City Police may soon get advanced training, including in counter-terrorism, with support from Mumbai’s new anti-terror outfit Force One.

The commando force here was formed after selecting the young officers posted to various stations here. Top police officers in the State have trained this select group of civil policemen in countering emergencies.

The force was unveiled here last November when the city was in need of tight security cover after a red alert was sounded across the country following terror attack in Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

It was only then that the people of Mysore learnt about the presence of a commando force in their city to tackle emergencies. The commandos are aged less than 25 and are highly motivated, according to the police.

City Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal told The Hindu that he spoke to commander of Force One S. Jagannathan and requested him to lend inputs to train the force in Mysore, if not on the full scale of Force One, but at least in some areas.

“I spoke to him two months ago. During that time, he was busy completing the training sessions for his force which was unveiled in Mumbai recently. He told me that he would discuss about sharing inputs on training soon,” Mr. Agarwal said.

The Police Commissioner said: “We are committed to upgrading the commando force with advanced training. Though we have no plans of increasing the number of commandos at the moment, we have plans to impart them training, including in counter-terrorism, to keep them ready for handling emergencies.”

Force One commandos demonstrated their skills during their passing out parade in Mumbai recently.

The Chamundi Force had three-months of rigorous training last year.

The force has received basic training in handling emergencies and is also slated for advanced training, especially in handling terror attacks. The force is usually kept in reserve and used only when necessary.

Though they, along with other recruits, have been posted to various police stations here, they are not spared for normal duties as the police here felt about the need for a dedicated commando force for Mysore.

The commando force will become fully operational to tackle any emergency once all its members receive training in counter-terrorism and in using the latest arms and equipment.
