BHUBANESWAR: Paradip port would achieve a handling capacity of 134 million tons per annum of cargo on completion of developmental projects by March 2012. This was informed to Union Minister for Shipping Thiru G. K. Vasan, who visited Paradip Port, on Thursday. Mr. Vasan reviewed status of ongoing projects, growth of traffic and future plan of port. Union minister inaugurated jetty for coast guard and Indian Oil Corporation vessels, RO-RO jetty at port and laid foundation stone for construction of oil berth. According to Paradip Port Trust, Indian Oil Corporation was setting up Pradaip Oil Refinery, which would be commissioned by March 2012. In the meanwhile the oil PSU commissioned single point mooring for pumping crude oil to their refinery at Barunei and Haladia through pipeline. “The existing oil berth is of 6 mtpa and it will not be adequate to cater their needs. To meet the additional demand of handling crude oil, a second oil berth is needed. The project entailed an investment of Rs. 172.97 crore which would augment port capacity by 10 million tonne per annum,” PPT said. Among others who accompanied the Union Minister to port’s mechanized coal handling plant included PPT Chairman K. Raghuramaiah and deputy chairman Biplav Kumar.
