Karnataka Kreeda Ratna Award to be given from next year

30 sportspersons selected for Ekalavya awards

The awards will be presented on December 17 or 21


Bangalore: The Karnataka Government on Wednesday announced Ekalavya Awards for 30 sportspersons for the years 2007 and 2008.

Minister for Sports and Youth Services Goolihatti D. Shekhar told presspersons that 15 sportspersons each have been selected for the years 2007 and 2008. The awards would be presented at a function at Raj Bhavan on December 17 or 21.

A total of 111 applications had been received for the award for the year 2007 and 57 applications for 2008, the Minister said.

No cricketer has been selected for the award in 2007 and 2008. Each selected sportsperson would be given cash award of Rs. 50,000, a bronze statue of Ekalavya, a certificate, and a set of clothes. The cash prize would be increased to Rs 1 lakh from the next year.

On the lines of Rajiv Khel Ratna at the Centre, the Government has decided to institute a Karnataka Kreeda Ratna Award and it would be given to best sportsperson of the year from the next year onwards, he said.

The awardees for 2007 are: Manjula L – athletics (Kolar), Nithyasosale – badminton (Bangalore), R. Umadevi – billiards (Bangalore), M. Swathik – chess (Bangalore), Aliyas Das Gupta – equestrian (Bangalore), Xavier Vijayakumar – Football (Bangalore), N. Laxmi – fencing (Bangalore), J.M. Hariprasad – hockey (Kodagu), M.N. Varadarajan – kho-kho (Mysore), Thygaraj – Kabbadi (Bangalore), Nayana Shriyan – power lifting (Mangalore), V. Kavitha - rifle shooting (Bangalore), Kshipramahajan – swimming (Bangalore), Sharat Gaikwad – physically challenged sports (Bangalore) and L.M. Karibasappa – bodybuilding (Davangere).

The awardees for 2008 are: V.R. Poovamma - athletics (Mangalore), Srinivas Nayak – basketball (Raichur), Ashwini Ponnappa – badminton (Bangalore), Girish Kaushik – chess (Mysore), Cavery R. Banakar – cycling (Bagalkot), Nanjundegowda – fencing (Bangalore), A.L. Vikram Kanth – hockey (Kodagu), Rohini B. Patil – judo (Belgaum), C.P. Adarsh – kho-kho (Hassan), Uday Chowta – kabbadi (Mangalore), B.R. Pramila – netball (Mandya), N.B. Jyothi – power-lifting (Chitradurga), Rohit Rajendra Hawaldar – swimming (Bangalore), A.K. Akshata – volleyball (Chikmagalur) and Farman Basha – physically challenged sports (Bangalore).

Mr. Shekhar said from next year onwards selected sportspersons would be honoured with awards on August 29, the birthday of Dhyanchand.
