‘75 p.c. cancers related to dietary habits’

HYDERABAD: Latest treatment techniques available around the world for treatment of cancer and recent update on cancer care guidelines will be discussed at the 31st National conference of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROICON)-2009 being organised in city from Thursday.
The four-day conference being organised here after a gap of 17 years would have renowned experts on different types of cancer from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the biggest and most prestigious society in Radiation Oncology in the world , said Dr.Vijay Anand P.Reddy, Director, Apollo Cancer Institute and Chairman, Organising Committee, AROICON 2009 .
The specialists on National Comprehensive Cancer Care (NCCC) guidelines based on updated clinical research outcome in the US would also participate. European society of Medical Oncology and International Union Against Cancer, extended academic accreditation to the event, he said.
The conference being hosted by Association of Radiation Oncologist of India (AROI), AP Chapter and Apollo Cancer Institute here, would focus on combination of multimodality treatment aiming at maximum cure and minimal morbidity.
Dr.Vijay Anand said overall cancer treatment improved with cure rates going up from 35 per cent to 65 to 70 per cent. Seventy five per cent of cancers, based on known reasons were related to dietary habits, tobacco chewing, smoking. Vegetarian diet, exercise, and including fruits and vegetables in every meal would go a long way in cancer prevention, he added.
