Nedumbassery: As a preliminary step towards the launch of an airport-based industrial park on its property, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has formally invited aerospace companies and entrepreneurs to set up industrial units at the project site. The invitation, issued along with a layout of the proposed industrial park, offers developed plots of half-acre in single or multiple units on long-term lease for the various Indian and overseas and joint venture companies. The investors are also offered airport-based Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status for the location, a nod for which is pending with the Union Ministry of Commerce. The airport company will also provide its own domestic and international cargo service to the industrial units apart from utilities such as electricity, communication network and effluent treatment. In fact, it has already initiated the procedures to establish a 110 kV sub-station on its property to cater to the upcoming industrial park. As per the invitation, investment can be made in the area of airport and aerospace-related industries for products and services ranging from aircraft and engine components to airport equipment to airport-based computer software development and software solutions. The project is planned to be developed in two phases. While the area proposed for the first phase is close to the apron and the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) unit, the area earmarked for the second phase of development is a property adjacent to the cargo complex. It also sets aside half-an-acre land to set up a science park and two acres for constructing the proposed airport museum just outside the project site. The company embarked on a plan to develop the industrial park — a vital arm of the proposed Aerotropolis (airport city) on the 450 acres land around the airport after the State IT department had rejected its application to set up an IT park. This was followed by a decision by the company director board to streamline the selection procedure for interested investors. Official sources have also confirmed reports that the CIAL started negotiating with a couple of companies that had come forward expressing the interest in the venture. It is learnt that the interested parties include Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. in Bangalore.
