SALEM: The members of Road Safety at a meeting here on Wednesday have urged the District administration to regulate traffic near Five Roads ‘round tana’ which of late has been witnessing heavy traffic.

Presided over by Collector J. Chandrakumar and attended by senior officials including District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, SP V. M. Mayilvahanan among others and members from general public, the meeting discussed issues related to traffic and road safety in the city in detail.

Members had forwarded their suggestions for traffic improvement and pointed out the flaws in the existing system of traffic management.

The meeting also discussed relocation of bus stops, many of them near traffic junctions causing heavy traffic snarls, marking median lines, constructing footpaths on either side of the roads, identifying spaces for parking vehicles on road margins, action against unlicensed share autos, establishing high mast lamps, awareness on railway level crossings etc.

After the meeting, Collector pointed out that works were on to relocate the bus stops.

He pointed out that there was heavy traffic at the Five Road Junction and wanted the officials to explore an alternative route for buses via Sri Gokulam Hospital.

He also asked them to book those who were found using cell phones while driving.

The Collector wanted the police to clear traffic for emergency ambulance services 108.

Salem Corporation Commissioner K. S. Palaisamy, Mettur Sub Collector Lakshmi Priya, Council Chairman Arunachalam and PA to Collector Pitchai Pillai also participated in the meeting.
