Residents oppose plan to open liquor outlet

Concerned: Residents of the Police Colony in Hassan staging a protest on Wednesday.

HASSAN: Residents of Police Colony in Hoysala Nagar here staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding that the Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) withdraw the proposal to open a liquor outlet in the neighbourhood.

The residents, led by retired police sub-inspector Kumaraswamy and district president of autorickshaw drivers’ association Chandru presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner on the issue.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Kumaraswamy and Mr. Chandru said the MSIL had proposed to open the outlet in the building belonging to Gowramma. A working class colony, the area has a high school, a veterinary hospital, a temple and a ground where Muslims offer prayers.

They said that a few years ago, there had been a proposal to open a liquor outlet in the area, but following protests by the people and objections raised by H.S. Prakash, MLA, andthe former Minister B. Shivaram the proposal was dropped.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Subbaraya Kamat promised to forward the memorandum to the Excise Department.
