JNTU-K sets sights on new benchmark

Three initiatives launched to raise the bar


The idea is to engage students in productive activity during the period of study, says V-C

The university also plans to start oil exploration engineering


VISAKHAPATNAM: In an attempt to internationalise education, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)-Kakinada has launched three new initiatives, as part of its pilot project.

Giving details to the press here on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor of the university Allam Appa Rao said that the new initiatives include the setting up of the Academic Audit Cell, an industry-institution interface cell and a cell to deal with foreign universities.

Seniors’ responsibility

The Academic Audit Cell headed by Prof. G.V.R. Prasada Raju will constitute of senior professors from various universities, NITs and IITs and will be responsible for checking various aspects like laboratory facilities, faculty quality, teaching and learning and process, student attendance, student performance and efforts made by the management for quality improvement in all the 226 JNTU-Kakinada affiliated engineering and professional colleges.

The cell will be empowered to disaffiliate any of the colleges, if it falls behind the prescribed standards.

“The cells have been started to improve the quality of teaching and the institutions. The idea is to engage the students in productive activity during the period of study. We also intend to change the curriculum from time to time to enable the students to have a direct bearing in the economic development of the country,” said the V-C.

New courses

JNTU- Kakinada has already started a couple of industry specific courses like M.Tech in Nuclear Energy Engineering and B. Tech in petrochemical engineering. The university also plans to start oil exploration engineering, agriculture engineering and petrochemical and instrumentation engineering in collaboration with Honeywell.

Dr. Appa Rao informed that the university will be shortly entering into an MoU with Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) for hands on project experience for the all the engineering students under its fold.

IGIAT is a Visakhapatnam-based advanced training institute, floated in collaboration with the Government of AP, Government of Germany and Gayatri Vidya Parishad.

MoU signed

The director of foreign university cell Prof. P. Udaya Bhaskar informed that JNTU- Kakinada has signed a MoU with Asian Institute of Technology for an integrated dual degree M.Tech programme in infrastructure engineering and a M.Tech programme in Mechatronics.

Training programme

The director of industry-interface cell Prof. Padma Raju said that the university has tied-up with Microsoft for providing on campus training to all its nearly two lakh students.

The Secretary of Gayatri Vidya Parishad P. Somaraju was present.
