Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: It was on this day last year that the nation began to face, for the next 72 hours, one of its most challenging moments in national unity and security, as terrorists from across the border launched deadly strikes on key public places in the financial capital of the country. In what later came to be known as 26/11, as many as 173 people lost their lives and about 300 were injured, even as the country’s uniformed personnel, from the elite National Security Guards as well as the police, staked their own lives to gun down the terrorists and free Mumbai from their clutches. To remember the sacrifices of these martyrs and discuss the imperativeness of national integrity and peace, The Hindu will organise a few programmes on Thursday as part of its corporate social responsibility. The programmes are being organised in association with the Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education. The Elements School of Visual Arts is the co-sponsor. A “Walk for peace” will start at Siddhartha Academy at 8.30 a.m., in which freedom fighters, office-bearers of the Siddhartha Academy, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and a few students will take part. The walk will proceed through Madhu chowk, Sikhamani centre, Veterinary hospital, IGMC stadium and All India Radio before culminating at Swaraj Maidan. At 6 p.m., there will be a “Peace Promotion Initiative” meeting in Siddhartha auditorium, where speakers from different walks of life will talk on the need to fight terrorism and ensure peace and stability in the country. Students of eight colleges of Siddhartha Academy will participate. Freedom fighters Parakala Pattabhi Rama Rao, Ravuri Arjuna Rao, Commissioner of Police K.V. Rajendranath Reddy, NCC EME Coy Commanding Officer Lt. Col. M.Z.U. Siddiquie and Islamic scholar Maulana Abdul Wahid Madani will deliver messages. There will be cultural programmes on the theme of patriotism and national integrity.
