Kozhikode: The city Corporation council has given the green signal to the Department of Education to use Mananchira Square as the main venue for the State school youth festival scheduled to be held here from January 9 to 15. Mayor M. Bhaskaran, who chaired the council meeting on Tuesday, said that the Deputy Director of Education who is the joint general convener of the festival, had last month had sought permission from the Council to use the square for the 50th edition of the festival. Usually, Mananchira Square was not allotted for staging public programmes, he said. Earlier, the organisers had sought permission to set up the main stage at the Corporation Stadium. But the civic body struck down the idea, concluding that the event would damage the stadium turf. Mananchira Square was allotted so that Kozhikode would not lose the chance of hosting the State-level festival, Mr. Bhaskaran said. The other venues of the festival are Malabar Christian College ground, Gujarati Hall, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, the Town Hall, NGO Union Hall, Sree Narayana Centenary Hall, C.H. Hall and Tali Zamorin’s School. Cultural events will be staged at the Muthalakulam Maidan. There will be cultural programmes on all festival days. Food will be served to 10,000-odd people on the Tagore Centenary Hall and Model Higher Secondary School premises.
