UDF councillors stage walk-out Call to repair roads before schools art fete begins Kozhikode: Mayor M. Bhaskaran has said that the State government took the decision to extend the boundaries of the city considering its development prospects, rather than to obtain funds from Centrally-sponsored schemes. Replying to discussions on the issue at the City Corporation Council meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Bhaskaran said the government had taken the decision to include Beypore, Elathur and Nallalam-Cheruvannur grama panchayats in the city as Kozhikode was one of the smallest municipal corporations in the State. Earlier, the councillors belonging to the United Democratic Front (UDF) staged a walk-out after the Mayor denied Leader of the Opposition P. Mamu Koya Haji permission to table an urgent motion asking the State government to rescind its decision. Later, Congress member P.K. Mamu Koya highlighted the bad condition of roads through a calling-attention motion. Most roads were full of potholes and unmotorable, he said. Taking part in the deliberations, Bharatiya Janata Party member K.V. Venugopalan said roads needed to repaired before the State schools youth festival got under way. CPI (M) councillor P. Divakaran raised the issue of the pig menace at Rajiv Nagar and Kalluthankadavu colony. Health officer B. Beena Kumari said that the Department of Forest and Wildlife had been requested to capture the animals roaming the streets. School fete venueThe Council gave the green signal to the Department of Education to use Mananchira Square as the main venue for the State schools art festival scheduled to be held here from January 9 to 15. Mayor M. Bhaskaran, said the Deputy Director of Education had last month had sought permission from the Council to use the square for the 50th edition of the festival. Usually, Mananchira Square was not allotted for staging public programmes, he said.Earlier, the organisers had sought permission to set up the main stage at the Corporation Stadium. But the civic body struck down the idea, concluding that the event would damage the stadium turf. Mananchira Square was allotted so that Kozhikode would not lose the chance of hosting the State-level festival, Mr. Bhaskaran said.
