Two CPI(M) leaders shot dead

Raktima Bose

KOLKATA: Suspected Maoists shot dead two leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the Lalgarh region of West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district in the last two days.

Madan Ghosh, 58, was supervising harvest at Shilda in Belpahari block, along with his son Swapan, early on Tuesday when unidentified youths approached him.

They beat up Mr. Ghosh before shooting him dead. His son was critically injured. Mr. Ghosh was a member of the CPI(M)’s Belpahari zonal committee and also of the Belpahari panchayat.

In the other incident, a group gathered outside Ashok Kotal’s house at Khairashuli near Kotwali late on Monday. They called him out under the pretext of attending a meeting, took him to a wooded area nearby and shot him dead.

More than 100 CPI(M) supporters have been killed by Maoists in the past five months.
