IOB begins in style

Chennai: Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank began its title defence in the senior division hockey league championship with a comfortable 7-1 victory over Central Excise at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday.

T.S. Panchapakesan, President, CHA, inaugurated the championship.

ICF got the better of Tamil Nadu Police 2-0 in a Pool ‘B’ game on Monday.

Tamil Nadu Postal withdrew from the tournament due to administrative reasons, tournament officials said.

The results: ICF 2 (Ramesh Kanna, Gerard) bt Tamil Nadu Police 0.

On Sunday: IOB 7 (Senthil, Vinod Rayar 2, Adam Sinclair, Iyyappan 2, Muthuselvan) bt Central Excise 1 (Vinoth Kumar); Madras Blues 2 (Ayyadorai, Mani) bt FCI 0; SAI ‘A’ 3 (Vinod Kumar 2, Gnanavel) bt Indian Bank 2 (Heartlin James, Philip Martin).

Haryana dominates

Haryana swept the gold medals in all but one category of the wrestling event in the girls’ division on the penultimate day of the PYKKA National-level Group I sports meet here on Monday.

The results (winners only): Boys: Weightlifting: 62kg: K. Jagadeesh (AP); 77kg: S. Satish Kumar (TN).

Taekwondo: 51kg: B. Karthick (TN); 59kg: Janey Dharma (TN); 68kg: Powar Bhimraj (Mah); Over 73kg: Anil Kumar (AP).

Girls: Wrestling: 52kg: Sanshar Shada (Mah); 56kg: Sudesh (Har); 60kg: Sudesh (Har); 65kg: Rakhee (Har); 65-70 kg: Kavita (Har).

Taekwondo: 47kg: Sandhya Rani (TN); 55kg: Nivedithaa (TN).

Hat-trick by Wassan

Manu Wassan’s four-wicket haul (four for 23) including a hat-trick was the highlight of Presidency Club’s nine-run win over Mylapore Club in the Presidency Cup T20 tournament being held here.

The results: Alumni Club 137 for four in 20 overs (Mahadevan 53, N. Suraj 50) bt Madras Gymkhana Club 115 for eight in 20 overs (Rajesh 35, Mahadevan three for 21); MRC 103 for nine in 20 overs (Mathew Chacko five for 11) lost to T. Nagar Social Club 107 for no loss in 7.3 overs (Sundaresan Jr. 42 n.o., Venkat Narayanan 50 n.o.); Presidency Club 131 for eight in 20 overs (Sandeep three for 15) bt Mylapore Club 122 for seven in 20 overs (Sandeep 25, Manu Wassan four for 23 (including a hat-trick).

TN cops do well

Three officers from Tamil Nadu, M. Ravi (IG / Additional COP), P.C. Lallawmsanmga (IGP Modernisation) and Ms. S. Rajeswari (SP / Video Piracy Cell, CBCID), claimed a gold medal each for the second year in succession in the in the all-India Police badminton championship held at the SVP Police Academy (Hyderabad) from November 13 to 16.

Out of the nine medals at stake, Tamil Nadu team won three gold medals and one silver. The team consisted of P.C. Lallawmsanga (IGP, Modernisation), M.K. Jha (IGP / Director SCRB), Sanjay Arora (IGP, Armed Police), Shankjar Jiwal, (IGP / Intelligence), M. Ravi (Addl. CoP), K. Periaiah (DGP, Flower Bazar) and S. Rajeswari (Video Piracy).

Five post wins

Five players — K.G. Chaithanyaa (Velammal MHS School), S. Anand Raj (SRDKVV), G. Jaswant (Montfort Academy), A. Akshaya (Vellaiyan Chettiar MHS School) and J.G. Nivedhitha (Everwin MHS School) — won their games against International Master V. Saravanan (BPCL) in a simultaneous display organised by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association on Sunday.

In all, 53 players had participated in the10-hour long chess marathon. Four players — Ananda Vignesh (Kaligi Ranganathan Montford MHS School) S. Adithya (Jawahar Vidyalaya) S. Yogit (MVM) and B. Kumaran (Sri Sankara Vidyalaya) — drew their games.
