Gold for Sethuraman

NEW DELHI: S.P. Sethuraman pipped teammate and fellow International Master Vidit Gujarathi to take the under-16 gold in the World youth chess championship at Antalya, Turkey, on Sunday.

The two Indians finished with nine points from the 11-round event.

Sethuraman’s superior tiebreak score gave him the gold and forced Vidit to settle for the silver medal.

India collected two more silver medals. M. Karthikeyan (9 points) tied for the under-10 title but was placed second on tiebreak while Ivana Furtado came second best in the girls’ under-10 section. Ivana scored 8.5 points.

Two more bronze medals came from G.V. Sai Krishna (under-14) and J. Saranya (girls’ under-14). Both scored 8.5 points.

The biggest disappointment for India on the final day was the defeat of joint overnight leader Vaibhav Suri in the under-12 category. Suri, with eight points, eventually took the eighth spot.
