dated November 24, 1959: Fixation of prices

A statutory price fixation board which will fix prices of all food crops, including sugar, will shortly be set up by the Government of India. The committee will include representatives of farmers. The scheme will come up before Parliament. This was announced by Mr. S.K. Patil, Union Food Minister, in the Lok Sabha on November 23, replying to a discussion on the scarcity of sugar. Mr. Patil said that the board would be a permanent body and would sit day after day and examine all matters relating to the production and cost structure of various agricultural commodities. He also announced that whatever the situation Government did not propose to import sugar to meet the shortfall. The increased demand would have to be met from internal production, he said. That equally applied to the quarter million-ton reserve he proposed to raise.
