dated November 23, 1959: Role of heavy industry

Prime Minister Nehru on November 22 declared that the danger of Chinese border attacks had all the more stressed the paramount necessity of laying firm and strong foundations of heavy industry in India.

Mr. Nehru, who was addressing the fifth Delhi Pradesh Congress political conference, warned against the mentality of depending for all time on foreign sources for modern weapons to defend the country.

Mr. Nehru said that India was not weak militarily and was prepared to meet any challenge to her integrity. But it was clear that the finest army in the world would crack up unless it was backed by a strong economy based on heavy industries.
