Preparations on for Council election

SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Pankaj Kumar Pandey said here on Sunday that preparations for election to the Shimoga Local Authorities constituency of the Legislative Council had begun.

Giving details about the calendar of events to presspersons here, Mr. Pandey said that notification for the election would be issued on November 24, the last date for filing nominations was December 1, scrutiny of nomination papers would be done on December 2, the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers was December 4, and the date of polling was December 18.

He said that the counting of votes would be done on December 21.

Mr. Pandey said that the candidates could file nomination papers between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from November 24 to December 1. The Shimoga Local Authorities constituency comprises nine taluks — Shimoga, Bhadravati, Sagar, Tirthahalli, Hosnagar, Sorab and Shikaripur of Shimoga district; and Honnali and Channagiri taluks of Davangere district.

Mr. Pandey said that MPs for Shimoga and Davangere, MLAs, MLCs, members of gram, taluk and zilla panchayats; members of municipal councils, including nominated members, and members of town panchayat, including nominated members, were eligible for voting.

There are a total of 4,475 voters and 2,115 of them are women. A total of 379 polling booths would be set up, he said. Earlier, a meeting with agents of political parties was held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner.
