Illegal mining on the rise: SGAT

Bhubaneswar: Voicing concern over spurt in illegal mining, The Society of Geoscientists and Allied Technologies (SGAT) on Sunday asked Orissa to quickly frame a mineral policy as unmined areas reserved for companies like POSCO were more vulnerable to plunder.

“There is a significant increase in illegal mining of iron and manganese ore since early 2008 when the prices rose to about Rs.8,000 per tonne for high grade calibrated iron ore,” SGAT representatives said here. — PTI
