“Sand mining rampant in the Vaippar”

Staff Reporter

Tuticorin: Rampant sand quarrying was taking place in the Vaippar river, one of the major water resources in the district, R. Nallakannu, Chairman, Central Control Commission, Communist Party of India, said at M. Kottur in Ettayapuram taluk in the district on Sunday.

Illegal sand quarrying would deplete water resources since residents of Vilathikulam and nearby villages largely depend on tanks near the river.

Rule flouted

As per the government’s rule, sand quarrying was permitted up to three feet but it was flouted by the miners.

The illegal practice had been taking place for a long time, Mr. Nallakannu said.

Over 30 members, including A. Mohanraj, district secretary of the CPI; L. Aiyalusamy, former MLA; Ilasi Maniyan, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Arts and Literary Federation; M. Balamurugan, district secretary, All India Youth Federation; K. Tamilarasan, district secretary, All India Centre of Trade Unions, among others, were present.

Earlier, the members took out an awareness campaign on the streets of nearby villages.
