Welfare measures announced for noon meal staff

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday announced a slew of welfare measures for nutritious meal programme(NMP)/anganwadi employees.
Addressing a meeting organised by associations of the workers, the Chief Minister said a monthly medical allowance of Rs. 100 and festival advance of Rs. 2,000 would be given to the workers, as given to the government staff. This would benefit about 2.06 lakh workers. Nearly 16,000 workers, who retired prior to September 15, 2008, would also receive a monthly special pension. A special examination would be held for about 340 employees, who had completed B.Ed to make them teachers. Those who worked under the NMP and Integrated Child Development Services and got promotion as teachers, supervisors – grade II and health workers, 50 per cent of the service period prior to their promotion would be taken into account for calculating pension. The facility of leave with pay not exceeding 10 days would be extended to those who underwent surgeries under the new medical insurance scheme.
