Stones in the bile duct, pancreas and gall bladder were common APC being effectively used to arrest internal bleeding, says expert Kakinada: The Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Gastrointestinal Surgery Departments of Apollo Hospital, Kakinada, have recently performed some advanced interventions for the first time in Godavari districts. Dr. R Srinivas Murthy and Dr. D.V. Rama Krishna, Heads of Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery Departments, respectively, conducted Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography and Argon Plasma Coagulation surgeries. Patients presenting themselves with those conditions are hitherto referred either to the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad or other super specialty hospitals in bigger cities. These complicated surgeries are of late performed at Apollo Hospital, Kakinada, with almost cent per cent success rate, its medical director Dr. C Suryaprakasa Rao and hospital administrator V. Srinivas said in a press conference on Saturday. The Apollo team comprising Dr. D.V. Rama Krishna, Dr. R Srinivas Murthy, chief interventionist Dr. H.D. Shenoy and others performed ERCP on N.S. Prasad, a 56-year-old man who complained of jaundice and severe abdominal pain. Investigations revealed that he was having stones in the Common Bile Duct (CBD). APC was done on 60-year-old Venkateswara Rao and another person Surya Prakash. Both of them had hypotension and bleeding from rectum due to ulcers in the cecum and rectum. These were rectified by APC. Dr. D.V. Rama Krishna said Cholecystectomy (open surgery) and the less invasive Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy were the standard operating procedures. ERCP was used in both diagnosis and treatment of many pancreatic and biliary diseases and provides accurate information about them. Stones in the bile duct, pancreas and gall bladder were common nowadays due to infections or were surgically induced. Dr. Srinivas Murthy said APC was being effectively used to arrest internal bleeding by passing jets of argon gas on to the bleeding ulcers or lesions and then ionizing the gas with high frequency electric current causing the blood to coagulate. APC was mostly used primarily to stop bleeding from certain lesions in the gastrointestinal tract.
