Boat race held for fishermen

Yanam: A boat race was organised from Yedurlanka to Yanam on Saturday on the occasion of World Fisheries Day under the aegis of Fisheries Department. Seventeen teams, each comprising five fishermen, competed in the race covering a distance of 1.7 km in Gautami Godavari which is a branch of the main Godavari river. Minister for Revenue, Tourism and Fisheries, Malladi Krishna Rao gave away the first, second and third prizes (Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,000) to M. Yesaiah, P. Venkataswami and K. Nookaraju who led their teams. Assistant Director of Fisheries P. Meera Saheb, regional administrator Y. Lakshminarayana Reddy, municipal chairman G. Chandra Rao, Commissioner N. Appa Rao and others were present. Mr. Krishna Rao has at the World Fisheries Day celebrations held at Mahatma Gandhi Boys High School in the evening, distributed old-age pensions to 243 fishermen and other benefits to the fisher folk.
