Cancer and stem cells

BANGALORE: The cost of stem cell transplant to treat multiple myeloma, a blood-related disorder, reported globally among a large population, has declined, said K.C. Lakshmaiah, Head of Department of Oncology at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology here. The cost of treating multiple myeloma through stem cell transplant and bone marrow transplantation had reduced, and it was much lower in Kidwai compared to other institutions, Dr. Lakshmaiah said, addressing a meet on plasma cell dyscrasias here on Saturday. Life expectancy of the patients had increased by 55 per cent with various combinations of chemotherapy. “A stem cell procedure at KMIO costs about Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 lakh,” he added.
