8 labourers killed in snowstorm

Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA: Eight labourers involved in snow clearance operations at Rani Nalla near the 13,500-foot-high Rohtang Pass were killed in a high-velocity snowstorm on Friday.

Workers engaged by various hydro-electric projects in this region migrate to their home States, mainly Bihar and Jharkhand, in winter due to extreme cold conditions in the tribal hill districts. Even on Friday nearly 70 workers were trying to cross the Rohtang Pass when they were caught in high-velocity icy winds and blustery weather, said sources.

None of the eight bodies has been retrieved so far, said the Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, B. M. Nanta. The Additional District Magistrate is monitoring the rescue operations from Manali and ex-gratia grant is being provided to the victims.

The Rohtang Pass has been closed for vehicular traffic since November 9 following a heavy snowfall. Some workers have even returned to Lahaul Spiti after the sudden snowstorm on Friday.

The minimum temperature at Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul Spiti, on Friday was minus 11.4.

About 16 people were airlifted from the high-altitude district on Thursday in a small chopper out of nearly 400 who were stranded. The government is planning to pump in more helicopters to rescue the trapped commoners.
