Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and several leaders of different political parties have expressed grief at the death of the former Union Minister B. Shankaranand. “In his death we have lost a veteran leader who espoused the cause of Karnataka at the Centre,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said in his condolence message. In a condolence message, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj said: “I deeply regret the sudden demise of Baburao Shankaranand. He had the distinction of winning seven consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Chikkodi (reserved) constituency. He had served in the Cabinet of the late Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P.V. Narasimha Rao.” Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda said in the death of Mr. Shankaranand, the State and the country have lost an important leader. The people of Chikkodi had continuously returned him to the Lok Sabha which is enough indication of his popularity, he said. Union Minister for External Affairs S.M. Krishna, Union Minister for Labour Mallikarjun Kharge, Legislative Council Chairman Veeranna Mathikatti, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R.V. Deshpande, State BJP president D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Congress leaders D.K. Shivakumar and M.H. Ambareesh have mourned the death of Mr. Shankaranand.
