Collector asked to probe Sambhavi’s ‘captivity’

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: The State Human Rights Commission on Friday directed district Collector Mukesh Kumar Meena to inquire into the alleged violation of rights of Sambhavi, a seven-year-old girl, who is being projected as child prodigy with exceptional spiritual qualities and memories of previous births.

SHRC Chairman B. Subhashan Reddy told The Hindu in Hyderabad that he had called for a report from the Collector by November 30 seeking information about the parents or guardians of Sambhavi. Several NGOs led by former Official Language Commission A.B.K. Prasad had complained SHRC that the human rights of girl were being violated and she was denied education.

The girl is residing at Suryanandi temple near Nandyal in Kurnool district under the care of her mentor Usharani. Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama will pay a visit to the temple on December 21 to bless the child. According to her mentor, the girl was born at Varanasi to an orthodox couple. Meanwhile, child rights activists and progressive organisations accused the group of violating the rights of the child by not allowing her to attend school and enjoy childhood. They alleged that attempts were being made to install the girl as the “Living Goddess” with the unintentional support of the media .
