CHENNAI: Amendment will be brought in the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 to make the ‘energy savings certificate’ tradable, said Ajay Mathur, Director-General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, here on Friday. Distributing the national award for Excellence in Energy Management - 2009 on behalf of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr. Mathur said there was a great potential for energy saving in industries. The present energy saving by industries was not up to the expected level. To make the companies adopt energy-saving measures, the government had decided to give energy-saving certificates to companies which had achieved reduction in the energy quota fixed for them. These certificates could be sold to other companies who were not able to meet the target and show compliance. To make the energy-saving certificate tradable, the present Energy Act required an amendment, which would be introduced in Parliament soon. He hoped that the energy saving certificates could maximise energy savings nationally in the most cost-effective manner. Mr. Mathur said the Bureau was planning to expand the energy efficiency labelling programme. At present, 11 products, including refrigerator, air-conditioner, transformers and tube lights, were included in the programme and nine more would be added soon. The government planned to achieve an overall saving of 10 million tonnes of oil equivalent over a three-year period, he added. N.S.Ganapati, chairman, National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, said 38 companies were short-listed for the award, which had achieved an annual recurring savings of Rs.1,510 crore in the last three years. Twenty companies were selected for the ‘Excellent Energy Efficient Unit’ award and the remaining were awarded ‘Energy Efficient Unit,’ he said.
