BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday allowed a criminal petition by Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the scion of the erstwhile Mysore royal family, and two others and quashed a first information report (FIR) against them by the Forest Department alleging destruction of the flora and fauna on the Bangalore Palace Grounds. Mr. Wadiyar and two employees of the Bangalore Palace had moved the High Court in 2006 against an FIR lodged against them by a Deputy Conservator of Forests, Bangalore, alleging deliberate and wanton destruction of a lake in the Palace Grounds and destruction of trees such as sandalwood, tamarind, honge, coconut and so on without permission. It said they had also filled up a lake and wetlands abutting it, dumping debris and mud transported from a construction site. In its statement of objections, the State had said Mr. Wadiyar was the owner of the land and that he had not reported any injury/damage to the trees to the Deputy Conservator of Forests as was envisaged under the provisions of the Forest Act. Mr. Wadiyar argued that he was in no way connected with the dumping of debris and denied all other allegations levelled by the Forest Department. The court allowed his petition.
