5 held on charge of assaulting CISF official

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Valiathura police have arrested five persons on the charge of assaulting a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intelligence officer in front of the international airport terminal here on Friday.

Sub Inspector, Valiathura, Suresh M. Nair said they were arrested on the basis of a First Information Report filed by the office of the CISF commandant K.C.S. Ray.

He identified them as Abu Backer, Anaz, Xavier, Siraj and Robinson.

Foreign money racket

Mr. Suresh said the accused were part of an airport-centred illegal foreign money exchange racket.

On Thursday, the CISF had arrested one of the alleged kingpins of the racket, Ouseph alias Kasturi, on the charge of illegally buying foreign currency from passengers alighting at the airport.

The CISF also seized Rs.34,000 from the suspect. They were handed over to the local police the same day. On the basis of a CISF report, the police have booked Ouseph on the charge of possessing unaccounted money under Section 41 (a) of the Indian Penal Code.

Retaliation

The police said the CISF action angered a local gang, which profited from the illegal money exchange. Some of its members attacked CISF intelligence officer S. Kumar, who was in plainclothes, in front of the terminal in the morning. The police said the accused threatened to kill him.

The police have charged the accused with assaulting a government servant on duty, verbal abuse and intimidation under sections 332, 294 (b) and 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code.

They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

Case on rioting charge

The Valiathura police have registered a case of rioting against six persons, including a lawyer identified as Stephen Rosario. SI, Valiathura, Suresh M. Nair said the accused were booked on the charge of trespassing into a disputed property at Liza Road. He said the property had been sealed by the police on the direction of the court of the Revenue Divisional Officer.
