Subabul farmers gherao officials

NANDIGAMA: Subabul farmers who have been agitating for a better price for their produce on Friday gheraoed officials of the Marketing Department in a bid to extract an assurance from them that the managements of paper mills would be persuaded to pay the price they have been demanding.

The farmers, who have been sitting on relay fast for the last seven days at a place near the market yard, were demanding that the managements of paper mills pay them Rs.2,200 a tonne. They were not satisfied with the price of Rs.1,750 a tonne fixed by the government. The managements of paper mills were not buying the produce from them but getting it through middlemen for a price ranging between Rs.1,000 and Rs.1,300 a tonne, the farmers say.

When Marketing Department Joint Director P. Sudhakar and Assistant Director Sarada Rani visited the camp around 6 p.m. on Friday, the agitated farmers gheraoed them and sought immediate solution to their demands.
