Two killed as train derails after blast
KOLKATA: Two persons were killed and 25 injured when the engine and eight coaches of the 321 Up Tata-Bilaspur Passenger derailed following a blast, suspected to be the handiwork of Maoists.
The derailment occurred between Posoita and Monoharpur on the South Eastern Railway’s Chakradharpur- Rourkela section in Jharkhand on Thursday night.
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee who suspected that Maoists could be responsible for blowing up the tracks, told journalists in New Delhi that she will take up the issue of railway safety with Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. The blast that created a three-foot deep crater with a six-foot diameter had damaged nearly 350 metres of railway tracks, an official of the South Eastern Railway told The Hindu on Friday.
The engine and five coaches had derailed and another three had tilted more than 45 degrees.
