MYSORE: Though the sufferings of victims of natural disasters and those displaced by various development projects of the Government are similar, they are often treated separately. The objective of a two-day workshop being held here is to highlight the similarities of the sufferings of thousands of rural people displaced by floods or cyclones and those ousted from their homes for development projects. According to the organisers, Vivekananda Institute of Indian Studies and the University of Iowa, the workshop’s premise is that unforeseen displacement, whatever the cause, is always experienced as a calamity. Displacement all too often triggers injustice as well as poverty, and unless substantially reconsidered and reformed, rehabilitation will continue to be inadequate and abusive, they said.
