VS to inaugurate ‘pattaya mela’ on November 24

2,100 acres of excess land identified

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government proposed to distribute 50,000 title deeds to the poor in the coming two months, said Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran here on Friday.

Addressing a press conference, he said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would inaugurate a ‘pattaya mela’ (distribution of title deeds) at Vizhinjam, near here, on November 24. Melas would be held in the remaining districts in the coming weeks.

Mr. Rajendran said the procedures had been completed for issue of title deeds to 2,000 persons living in the coastal areas of Adimalathura and Thennoorkonam in Thiruvananthapuram district. They were in possession of the land for decades.

He said the State Land Board had identified 2,100 acres of excess land (defined under the Land Reforms Act). Of this, 1,500 acres was ready for distribution.

He said the government had resolved the problem over issue of title deeds to settlers in the hilly areas of five districts. These deeds would also be distributed during the melas. The first phase of distribution of title deeds to tribal people under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act would also be done during the melas in six to seven districts. The rest of title deeds to tribal people would be distributed early next year.

The Minister said the government planned to distribute one lakh more title deeds next year by speeding up decisions on excess land and verification of land in the possession of farmers.

The Minister announced that clubs would be formed in all schools this year to create awareness about disaster management.

A meeting of officials of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department and Education Department attended by Education Minister M.A. Baby and himself had charted out a plan for formation of the clubs in 11,815 schools. The Chief Minister will inaugurate the scheme in December.
