HYDERABAD: Considerable planning and a lot of hard work behind the scenes was done to ensure the success of the campaign by Congress MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy and in ensuring that he becomes the rallying point for the ruling party in its hitherto modest show in the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Though only two days are left for the campaign, Mr. Jagan’s debut raised the campaign pitch as party workers, particularly youth, responded with enthusiasm. The campaign was keenly watched by party seniors and YSR loyalists. A dedicated team in the YSR camp that was lying low all these days plunged headlong to evolve a foolproof programme for the Kadapa MP. Legislators from across the State were involved in the meticulous planning for his two-day hurricane tour. Campaign strategists took enough care to see that mistakes committed during the ‘make Jagan CM’ campaign were not repeated. Accordingly, Mr. Jagan eulogised the leadership qualities of AICC president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. On their part, Jagan’s supporters ensuring large turnout for his road show in order to send across the message that he alone among Congress leaders had the capacity to draw crowds. Pleased by the response, they pointed out that Mr. Jagan won instant applause for his acerbic attacks against TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu. They claimed that a similar spirit was missing during the campaign by other Congress leaders. “His presence brought back memories of his father Rajasekhara Reddy. He should have been invited for the campaign much earlier,” a senior member of the APCC core committee for GHMC polls, said. But, not everyone in the party was happy with the show of strength by YSR loyalists. No one missed Mr. Jagan’s decision not to make any mention of either Chief Minister K. Rosaiah or APCC chief D. Srinivas in his speeches. These detractors also pointed out that he had not taken permission from the Congress leadership.
