JD(S) to finalise candidates for Council polls by Sunday

Staff Correspondent

Deve Gowda to attend party meeting in Hassan

Polling will be held on December 18

Shivaram likely to be Janata Dal (S) candidate from Hassan

HASSAN: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Minister H.D. Revanna said on Friday that party president H.D. Deve Gowda and State unit president H.D. Kumaraswamy would finalise the candidates for the elections to the legislative Council, on Saturday and Sunday.

Polling will be held on December 18 and the last date for filing nomination papers is December 1.

Mr. Revanna told The Hindu at Mosale Hosalli village, where he launched development projects, that Mr. Deve Gowda would visit Hassan on Sunday.

HDCC Bank president Patel Shivaram was likely to be the party candidate from Hassan. All leaders and functionaries of the party’s Hassan unit would attend the meeting on that day, Mr. Revanna said.

Alliance

Mr. Revanna said in places such as Bangalore urban, Bangalore rural, Belgaum, Dharwad and Mysore districts, where the party had to field two candidates, it was open for an alliance with the Congress. It would leave one seat in these places so that votes of the secular forces would be intact.

The Janata Dal (S) had an open mind and would leave the decision on alliance to be taken by its respective district units. In Belgaum, A.B. Patil would contest as a party candidate, he said.

Opportunity

The party was ready to leave the other seat to the Congress if it came for talks. This would also give an opportunity for all secular parties to come together, the former Minister said.

On the State Government handing over 1,950 acres of land to the NICE company, Mr. Revanna said that he would not comment on it as the matter was in the Supreme Court.

However, he said that it was the gift given to NICE as the company campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Revanna said that despite several appeals from Mr. Deve Gowda, the State Government did not increase the support price for maize. The Government led by Mr. Yeddyurappa had no concern for farmers, he alleged.

Appeal

Mr. Revanna said that he would appeal to the Education Minister to take steps to provide extra coaching for two hours to students of primary and high schools in the evening as they could not study at night owing to power cuts.
